Free dailies in France 4% up in readership

With 2.7 million readers free daily 20 Minutes is again the best-read newspaper in France according to the latest EPIQ/Audipresse study.

Paid sports paper L’Equipe is second (2.6 million), free daily Metro is third with 2.5 million readers. Le Parisien/Aujourd’hui and Ouest France are 4th and 5th with 2.3 million readers. Le Monde is 6th with 1.9 million readers.

The free Plus papers have 1.5 million readers while feee evening paper Direct Soir has one million readers.

All free papers increased readership compared to 2007 (click on picture for bigger view). In total 4.4 million French read a free daily on average in 2008.

Also most paid national papers have seen readership increase in 2008 compared to 2007/2008 and to the full year 2007. Regional papers like Ouest France, La Voix du Nord, Sud Ouest and Le Dauphiné Libéré saw a small drop in readership.

EPIQ/Audipresse also researched ‘brands’ meaning print, weekend, magazines and online presence. L’Equipe has 8.4 million ‘contacts’ a week, Le Monde 6.2 million, Le Figaro 5.3 million, 20 Minutes 5.3 million, Le Parisien/Aujourd’hui 5 million and Metro 4.8 million.
